Partners for Research and Development of Non Timber Forest Products in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the Southwest Pacific has rich terrestrial and marine biological diversity that have yet to be fully documented and understood. At the University of Goroka (UoG), we are looking at developing some of these naturally abundant forest resources into useful products for use as food, medicine and other products. We are therefore looking for partners who may be able to share and collaborate with us in developing some of these areas of research and development, such as; 1. Medicinal and aromatic plant documentation and screening of their extracts and pure isolates for pharmaceutical and agrochemical alternatives, 2. Documentation of the rich macrofungal (mushroom) diversity of PNG, preparation and collection of pure cultures and further study their uses as food (cultivation) and extracts as medicinal and agrochemical alternatives. Over time, these documented abundance of microorganisms can be used as indicators to monitor climatic variability in the tropical rainforest ecosystems. 3. Study to document the rich diversity of marine flora and further study the medicinal and agrochemical uses of the pure isolates from their extracts. 4. Documentation of the rich herpetofaunal diversity and study of the chemicals from their skin excretion as mechanisms for chemical defense, which may have useful applications in medicine and agriculture. We look forward to hearing from you. Stewart Wossa University of Goroka North Goroka Campus P. O.
